Hi, I've been lurking for the last few months waiting for the refresh. This'll be my first home Mac (got a Mac Pro and MBP in my office).

I ordered the 27" i7 Quad yesterday with 2GB 6970 and trackpad. Got the standard 4GB RAM and will add some more myself. It's a shame about the target display mode as I was hoping to use the iMac sporadically as a display in the lounge when my buddies bring their Xbox 360's round but hopefully there'll be a HDMI/DVI/Mini display port > ThunderBolt box. It's a pretty expensive occasional use proposition though and it might be easier to throw a 100 TFT display in a cupboard to get out for gaming.

I look forward to seeing some benchmarks.

Ahhh just as I bought a new MBP!!!!! Hopefully resale value won't take too big of a hit :(

13"ers generally lose 15-20% value after a year, so should be fine.

I'm not touching it until they offer 5.1 sound. I'm sure its just a matter of time, though.
Sometimes it helps to do a quick search. ;)

They do have surround sound support. (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304277#faq26)

I've seen some posts about transferring "that much data" in disbelief. I calculate that a two hour movie will no more about 450MB. I hope it is, of course. This is based on a 1-hr episode of Lost is about 200MB. I fudge in 50MB for the fact that each Lost episode never is EXACTLY 1 hour.

I can transfer that size (450MB) from my ReplayTV wirelessly to my PowerBook in less than a half hour with my Airport Extreme Basestation.

So... I see no problem. Perhaps the show will be delayed a little but not more than a few minutes

Lost runs about 42 minutes, so more like 600 meg. And you're assuming they'll ship movies at 320x240, which I doubt. If they up the quality to anything approaching DVD, file sizes will go way up. But I still think a well implemented wireless solution should be able to keep up, people are doing it already.

Of course, what did you expect from an interface designed for keyboards, joysticks, and mice?

Even USB 2.0 has a pathetic 50% effective utilization rate, while Firewire is ~95%. USB 2.0 is 480 Mb/s, which equals 60 MB/s, yet in real world speeds, you're lucky if you see 30 MB/s - HALF it's rated bandwidth. USB is just plain horrible for bulk data transfer, and the new 3.0 iteration is no different. The protocol overhead is atrocious.

Of course USB also operates in slow horrible PIO mode, meaning it has to run everything through the host CPU. PATA, SATA, SCSI, Firewire, and Thunderbolt all operate in DMA mode, bypassing the host CPU for much much faster transfers.

PATA has PIO modes too... You just have to work (or use a poopy old HD) to get it to turn on.

They might as well add a Core 2 Duo Mac Book Pro too.

My gues is that all these whiners would not even notice if you snuck in at night and swapped out ther procesor for a C2D chip. They'd just wake up the next moring fire up the computer and never even notice.

It's like those audiophiles who argue endlessly about if gold plated or silver plated speaker wire sounds better.

This may be a really dumb question, but when the new MBP comes out, do y'all think it'll stay aroudn the same price range or increase?

I'd guess stay the same or maybe even decrease depending on the price Apple gets on Merom chips.

Whether the iPhone, if/on release, is in two models (similar to the nano/video relationship) or not, here's a mockup I've just created, depicting what I would expect of the device at the moment.

I don't usually do mock-ups (this is in fact my first one) but with all the numpad/touchscreen/slide-down ideas in the works, I wanted to show a solution which is based very much on what we have right now. It would make sense that the devices would sit snugly in line with Apple's other mobile products.

    ...

Did you ever use a B&O phone?
I have this little beauty: BeoCom 4 (http://www.bang-olufsen.com/web2/systems/product.asp?section=systems&sub=tp&prodid=543).

There's also a scroll wheel you have to use to insert the contact names. It's nice but not as good as the keypad of a mobile to type text.

I wouldn't buy a phone without number pad, that's for sure.

Cram 1GB? Have you seen the 8GB iPod Nano? What are you talking about? Isn't flash memory capable of being used for running processes, or is it too slow?

thats whatI was thinking. But we could both be wrong.

This is just another pissing contest to result in a settlement and some bizarre technology sharing or nothing in particular.

    It's posturing.

this is the only comment that made sense in this entire thread.

    time to do research?

if you are not doing anything wrong, what is there to worry about?

I totally agree. We should just let any corporation or government track anything we do. If they want to turn our phones into constant listening devices, why would anyone oppose that, other than those who are doing wrong....

    Sheeple.

Between Samsung on the hardware and Google on the software, I can't believe anyone in their right mind actually saying with a straight face that the Samsung phone in question is not stealing from Apple. Get a grip.

......Checkpoints should be illegal anyway. .... Corruption is everywhere, people. I dislike most people that where the badge. Yeah, I'm prejudice in the same way that they are prejudice towards most citizens.

The servants have become the masters. People are so fearful, fat and happy that they'd rather not do anything about it. We fight (http://www.ncrepublic.org) the de facto state in court on a regular basis. Most of the cases get thrown out for lack of jurisdiction, or as they say "jurisdictional economy" (it gets too expensive to fight us). It's all just a money thing. They don't care.

    What a joke.

How would Safari be able to install that stuff? Forgive me for not knowing, but I haven't seen anything that allowed you to install software, or any executable code, from iOS Safari. Not with Apple's model. Maybe jailbroken, but that's a different story.

Now read through the rest of the posts after that and discover that Finder does not support Cut and Paste.

Ok but didn't someone say that CMD + Drag does the same for files?
